Is NFC enabled? How to check on Android and iPhone
The first check of any diagnosis and the one most often skipped. On Android it is a toggle in the settings or the quick panel, and it can be off with no visible sign. On an iPhone there is nothing to switch on, which changes what you should look for.
On Android
Search the settings application for NFC. The menu location varies between manufacturers, so searching beats navigating.
Many devices also expose a quick settings tile, which is the fastest way to check and the easiest way to switch it off by accident.
Toggle it off and on again while you are there. That clears a stuck state on some devices and costs nothing.
On a managed or work device, the setting can be restricted by policy, in which case it may be greyed out or absent rather than off.
On iPhone
There is no NFC toggle. On supported models the capability is present and managed by the system, so there is nothing to enable.
What matters instead is how a tag is read. Background reading is available from the iPhone XS and XR onwards, and on earlier supported models an application has to be launched manually.
Take NFC Tools. On iOS it requires an iPhone 7 or later running iOS 15.6 or later, and the app must be launched manually. Background reading is available from the iPhone XS and XR onwards.
So on an iPhone the question is not whether NFC is on, but whether the reading path you expect is available on that model.
Why it fails silently
A phone with NFC switched off gives no indication when it passes a tag. There is no message, no icon and no prompt.
So a tag that produces nothing looks broken, and the cause is a setting nobody looked at.
It also gets switched off without intent: a quick settings tile pressed by accident, a battery saving mode, a system update resetting a preference.
This is why it heads every diagnostic list, and why it is worth rechecking on a phone that failed yesterday and works today.
Do this before anything else
It costs five seconds and it eliminates the single most common cause of a tag doing nothing.
Check it on the phone that is failing rather than on the one you have in your hand, which is a distinction that matters when you are helping someone else.
And check it again after any system update, since a preference reset is invisible until it costs you an afternoon.
Only once it is confirmed on should you start investigating the tag, the case or the surface.
Frequently asked questions
Does NFC drain the battery if left on?
The cost of leaving it enabled is small on modern devices, which is why most people leave it on permanently.
Why is my NFC setting greyed out?
That usually indicates a managed device where policy controls the setting. Ask whoever administers the device.
Is there an NFC setting on iPhone?
No. On supported models the capability is present and system managed, so the useful question is which reading path your model supports.
Can an app switch NFC on for me?
It can generally send you to the setting rather than change it, since enabling it is a user decision on Android.
