When should you not use a tag in a car?

Whenever the tap would happen while the car is moving. A tag mounted where you have to reach for it at the wheel turns a convenience into a distraction, and the automation it triggers is never worth that. The tap belongs before the journey, with the car stationary.

The tap has a moment

Every NFC automation has a moment when it is meant to happen, and in a car that moment is before the journey, not during it.

A tap requires locating the tag, presenting the phone to it, and usually confirming something on screen. None of that belongs to a moving vehicle.

This is not a limitation of the technology. It is a limitation of doing anything with a phone while driving, and NFC has no exemption from it.

Placement encodes the moment

Where the tag sits decides when it gets tapped, and a tag within easy reach of the driving position is an invitation to tap it while driving.

A tag near the handbrake, on the console beside the seat, or on the phone cradle itself is tapped as you settle in and rarely afterwards. That is the placement to choose.

A tag on the dashboard within arm's reach at speed is the placement to avoid, whatever the metal underneath happens to allow.

Automations not to build

Anything that answers a call, replies to a message, or opens a conversation. The tap costs attention and so does the thing it starts.

Anything that needs a screen afterwards, such as choosing from a list, since the tap then buys nothing and the choosing is the dangerous part.

Anything you would want mid journey by definition, such as changing destination. That is a case for a voice command or for stopping, not for a tag.

What to build instead

One tap, before moving, that sets up the whole journey: destination loaded, audio started, phone silenced, message sent to say you have left.

A chain like this is exactly the case where several steps on one tap earn their complexity, because the alternative is several interactions in a vehicle.

Build it so nothing needs touching again until you arrive. If the automation cannot promise that, the automation is the wrong shape.

Frequently asked questions

Is tapping a tag safer than using the screen?

Only if it removes the screen entirely. A tap that leads to a screen has added a gesture without removing anything.

Where should a car tag not go?

Anywhere reachable at speed. A tag by the handbrake or on the cradle is tapped on arrival at the seat, which is the point.

Can a tag be used at a traffic light?

Treat a stop in traffic as driving. The automation should have been complete before the journey started.

What is the best car automation?

One tap that finishes everything: destination, audio, silence, and a message. Nothing left to touch until you arrive.
