Why does copying a transport card not work?

Because a transport card is a small protected system rather than a container of content. The balance and history live behind keys the operator holds, so a reading tool never obtains them, and there is nothing available to copy onto another tag.

It is not a tag in the sense you mean

A tag hands over its content to anyone who asks. A transport card does not: it runs a small application, holds stored value, and releases information only to readers that authenticate first.

They share a radio layer and almost nothing else. Comparing them is like comparing a printed poster with a locked filing cabinet because both are made of paper and metal.

What a tool actually gets

Detection, the technology, and whatever identifier the card exposes during selection. That is the extent of what any general purpose application obtains.

The balance, the journey history and the credentials are in protected areas. The card declines to release them without a key, and the key belongs to the operator.

Demonstrations showing more usually involve either an operator's own application, or a specific system with known weaknesses that has since been replaced. Neither generalises.

Why it is designed that way

Because the card carries money. A stored value instrument that handed its contents to any nearby reader, and could be duplicated onto a blank, would be unusable as a payment system.

The protection is therefore not an obstacle placed in your way, it is the product working correctly. A transport card that could be copied would be a transport card that nobody could trust.

What is legitimate instead

The operator's own application, which holds the keys and can show a balance or add value.

Platform wallet support where the operator has enabled it, which provisions a legitimate credential onto a phone rather than copying an existing card.

And, for the actual underlying need, usually just carrying the card. Most people asking this question want a spare or want it on their phone, and both of those are things the operator provides or does not.

What will not work, whatever the tool, is reading a card with a general application and writing the result to a blank tag. There is no result to write.

Frequently asked questions

Can any app read my transit card balance?

Only applications holding the operator's keys, which in practice means the operator's own software. A general tool sees the card exists and nothing more.

Why can I read a hotel key card but not a transit card?

Many hotel cards use simple technologies with weak or default protection, so a general reader gets further. Transit cards are built specifically to resist that.

Does this apply outside Japan?

The principle applies everywhere. Most transit systems protect their data with operator keys whatever the underlying technology, so the answer is the same in any city.

Can I put my transit card on my phone?

Only where the operator supports it, through their application or the platform wallet. That is a new credential being issued rather than a copy of the card you hold.
