How do you set up guest Wi-Fi sharing at home?

Decide the platform question before anything else, because a Wi-Fi record configures a network on Android and is not acted on the same way by an iPhone. Half your guests are on the other platform, so the answer shapes the whole thing.

The platform question

A Wi-Fi record written to a tag joins the network on Android. On an iPhone it is not acted on in the same way, so the tap does nothing useful.

Your guests are a mixture, and you cannot know which in advance. That makes a Wi-Fi record a partial solution rather than a complete one.

Which does not make it worthless. It makes the fallback part of the design rather than an afterthought.

The Wi-Fi record route

Write the network name and the password as a Wi-Fi record. An Android guest taps and joins, with no typing.

It works with no coverage, which matters because a guest with no signal cannot reach a page.

The cost is that the credentials sit on the tag in readable form, and that changing the password means rewriting the tag rather than editing something.

For a home network shared with people you invited, that is usually an acceptable trade.

The page route

Write a short web address instead, leading to a page that shows the network name and password, and offers a code to scan.

It works on every phone, it can be changed without touching the tag, and it can show extra information such as which of two networks to use.

The cost is that it needs coverage at the moment of the tap, which a guest who is not yet on your network may not have.

That single objection is why many people end up doing both.

Practical points

Use the guest network rather than the main one, so what you are sharing is a network with nothing on it.

Print the network name and password beside the tag anyway. It costs nothing, it serves everyone, and it survives a flat battery.

Say what the tag does, in a few words. Guests do not tap unlabelled objects in other people's houses.

And test it with somebody else's phone before deciding it works. Your own phone is already on the network, which makes it the one device that cannot test this.

Frequently asked questions

Will a Wi-Fi tag work for iPhone guests?

Not in the same way. A Wi-Fi record configures a network on Android, and iOS does not act on it, so a page or printed details serve them.

Should I share my main network?

Use the guest network where your router offers one. It limits what you are sharing to internet access.

Do I still need the password printed?

Yes. It costs nothing, serves every phone, and works when a battery is flat or a tap fails.

Why did it work on my phone?

Because your phone is already on the network. Test with a device that is not, which is the only meaningful test.
